    Two PHP based options:

    Elgg is GPL but needs some initial setup to make it work well.

    Social Engine requires a license fee, but is super slick out of the box.

    Hi, nice post. I agree that Elgg should be included. I used it to create grubstreetgang.com, a budding social network for writers, journos and other media types on the continent. I built an earlier version using buddypress but I found it a bit technically challenging for me. Elgg, I think offers great core functionality and is relatively easy to work with.

    Yeah, Buddypress is a bit like Microsoft - great software, just don't try customising it too much :P

    Good job on GrubstreetGang - looks interesting :)
