That's what happened right after I got my ASDL line. It was working, but the exchange wasn't connecting me to my ISP. So I called in, reached an agent who walked me through the ADSL setup process (obviously from a checklist), and when that failed, flagged the case as Urgent and sent it through to the network department. Voila - 30 minutes later, I was online.
It also helps to not get all pissy and angry at Telkom when they don't bend over backwards for you. You can either wait two weeks for a line, or you can scream at them for two weeks until you get your line - at the end, the only thing that differs is how stressed you are.
However, it shouldn't be this way. You shouldn't have to nag a company to come install something as essential as a telephone line. Only because they have (had?) a monopoly they can work like this. It's silly.
Perhaps a friendlier attitude to the poor technician that gets sent to your house, often by over-worked admin staff, will go a long way towards making things more pleasant.
Just a cents worth.
1) The 1st installation was ok with Telkom. Got nice speeds for a 512 line and didn't even need to phone them for any technical help. So in Vanderbijl I give Telkom 3 thumbs up.
2) Then I moved to Roodepoort, where everything when downhill, my connection kept dropping, I tried pinging the Telkom dns IP and I got a latency average of about 600ms and a lot of timeouts. If I call them all they can say to me is that my speed is ok and I should get good speeds. They even send a technician out to come investigate to no prevail. So it would seems like it is 4 thumbs down there.
Neotell gave me my line in 3 days and even with only 2 out of 5 stripes for reception I get my Telkom ADSL 512 speed and is a lot cheaper than Telkom. So 4 thumbs up there.
The only bad thing about Neotell is that with neotell prime it got voice and sms but I got a cell so in affect I do not use it and my speed is a bit lower, so I upgraded to the neoflex option where there is only data and a bit faster.
Telkom has its ups and downs and would like to see it perform and maybe even SABC come into the game and give us Cable. But as long as the fat cats getting fatter we thin cats not getting anything, except overpriced data.
So yes, I would like to see the price go down and service up. But there is a diffrence between bad service and incompetence to do the job.
